Climate, health, and living condition crises in the expanding informal settlements and slums of South-West Nigeria: a case report of Ogun and Oyo states

The rapid growth of informal settlements in southwestern Nigeria, particularly along the Lagos–Ogun–Oyo corridor, has created serious health and environmental challenges. Many residents lack safe housing, clean water, proper sanitation, and protection from climate-related hazards such as flooding and extreme heat. These conditions increase the risk of respiratory and waterborne diseases.

Although efforts have been made to address these problems, limited funding, weak enforcement, and poor coordination remain major barriers. A coordinated approach involving government, NGOs, and local communities is needed. Community participation, better urban planning, financial support, improved basic services, and climate resilience programmes can help create healthier, safer, and more sustainable communities.

Leveraging AI and data science to mitigate the respiratory health impacts of climate change in Africa: Organisation, costs, and challenges

Climate change is increasing health risks in Africa, particularly respiratory problems such as asthma and COPD. Artificial intelligence (AI) and data science can help by monitoring environmental conditions, predicting health risks, tracking diseases, and improving access to healthcare.

However, the use of AI in African health systems remains limited because of high costs, poor internet and electricity access, limited skills, and concerns about data privacy and responsible use. To overcome these challenges, African countries need greater investment, stronger policies, improved digital infrastructure, healthcare worker training, and community involvement.

A gradual introduction of AI, starting with training and pilot projects, could help African countries better predict and manage climate-related health risks and improve respiratory health outcomes.
